Vocational Qualifications
At Laurel Park Sixth Form, we focus exclusively on vocational qualifications and are the only Sixth Form in the borough to do so. The Department for Education (DfE) has recognized the growing need for vocational and work-related, skills-based qualifications to support the long-term economy. Our specialism aligns with the government’s reforms to post-16 education.
Why opt for vocational qualifications?
Here are several reasons why vocational qualifications might be a better fit for some students compared to A-levels.
Practical Focus vs. Theoretical Learning:
-
Vocational Qualifications develop practical skills directly relevant to specific careers or industries.
-
A-Levels offer a theoretical understanding of subjects, which may not always translate directly into workplace skills.
Career-Ready:
-
Vocational qualifications prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce, equipping them with industry-relevant experience and skills.
-
A-levels are often a stepping stone to higher education, so they may not lead directly to employment without further study.
Work Experience Opportunities:
-
Many vocational qualifications include mandatory work placements or apprenticeships, allowing students to gain real-world experience.
-
A-levels generally don’t offer compulsory work experience, leaving students with less practical exposure before entering the job market.
More Student Friendly:
-
Vocational qualifications are suited to students who prefer learning practically, and through coursework. There are exams, but they are spaced out over the 2 years, for example twice in a year.
-
A-levels have all their exams at the end of the 2 years, which can lead to more pressure and stress on those final exams. There is less coursework and practical learning experiences in A levels.
Pathway to Universities:
-
Vocational qualifications still offer a pathway to higher education, allowing students to progress to university or degree apprenticeships if they choose to.
